Searching's John Cho Doesn't Like Being The First Asian-American To Headline A Thriller

While John Cho has found success in a slew of movies and TV projects, it was only recently that the actor became the first Asian-American lead in a thriller on the big screen. He did this with Searching, a new movie from director Aneesh Chaganty about a young woman who disappears, leaving social media clues for her father to find. While the movie has earned some additional awareness due to John Cho leading the film, the actor recently revealed that he doesn't completely enjoy the notice for his role in the thriller. He outlined why, noting in a recent interview:

Listen... I'm just looking forward to the day when none of this is news. That's my take on it. It's exciting to be the first but it's a little sobering to learn that, too. I guess I no longer want to be the first Asian anything... because it means we haven't done it yet!

It's not that John Cho is mad about being in the spotlight for his role in Searching. Instead, he just seems to be waiting for the day when diversity casting in movies is no longer news. The fact that it took until 2018 for an Asian-American to lead a thriller to box office success is a bit shocking, but the audience's appetite for Searching has helped to spotlight the fact that diverse movies are not only catching on but viable to a wide audience at the box office. It may not have always been John Cho in the role, however. Elsewhere in the interview with the Herald Sun, John Cho even described passing on the original movie at first due to the heavy presence of technology and social media in the movie.

However, he has credited the director for pushing him in the right direction, previously telling CinemaBlend,

I had to be sold on it. Though I really loved the script, and the story was compelling, and I wanted to do a thriller, but I wasn't buying it shooting it on screens. I wanted it to look and feel like cinema, not a video. So I said no. I turned it down.

So far, Searching has made nearly $54 million worldwide. While that may not be as much as the moolah fellow Asian-led Crazy Rich Asians has brought in both domestically and internationally, it's still a big deal for a movie made on a lower budget and acquired for $5 million. While John Cho hopes to soon see the day when hearing about himself leading a thriller won't be the biggest news related to a movie he is starring in, for now, it has certainly helped bring more attention to the project. It's also a nice tie-in to the #starringJohnCho hashtag that ran around a couple of years ago. Audiences have seen the actor's star potential for a while, so it will be interesting to see what John Cho does next, especially with Star Trek 4 on hold. The First Footage For The Halloween Reboot Has Screened, Here Are The Reactions

Big things are coming to Haddonfield, Illinois later this year with the debut of David Gordon Green's Halloween, and it sounds like the Stronger director may have something extraordinary on his hands. In fact, the first footage from the Blumhouse reboot of the John Carpenter classic finally screened at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and CinemaBlend was in attendance to check it out. According to our very own Sean O'Connell, the film looks absolutely fantastic. Sean tweeted:

So, it seems like Halloween is very much going to live up to the sterling reputation of the original movie. As Sean notes in his tweet about the footage shown at CinemaCon: not only does the film look good, but it also directly builds off of the continuity established during Michael Myers' first rampage. Beyond that, the film actually looks like it will deliver the scares that fans are looking for.

Sean's praise for what Halloween is bringing to the table is shared by Birth.Movies. Death. editor Scott Wampler, who similarly took to Twitter after the presentation to voice his own excitement for the project. As he explained it, fans aren't ready for what it has in store; Scott said:

Beyond those two reactions, Rooster Teeth's Eric Vespe was in attendance at the Halloween presentation in Las Vegas. In addition to praising the look of the film, Eric also provided some insight into the narrative -- which slightly retcons the ending of the original to see a hardened Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) preparing for Michael's eventual breakout, having been captured after the murders committed in 1978. Eric wrote:

Finally, we come to Collider's Steven Weintraub, who made sure to note in a social post that non-believers in what Halloween has in store will be delighted to learn that the film will actually live up to its lofty promises. He wrote:

So, with all of those reactions to the footage in mind, it looks like the horror genre is about to get a seriously intense and terrifying shot in the arm with the return of one of its most legendary slashers. Halloween is finding new life by ignoring other sequels and carving out its own niche. Bring it on, Michael.

Bird Boxs Director Explains That Surprising Ending

Warning: Blindfold yourself if you don't want spoilers from Bird Box the film and the book.

Bird Box bookended its story by closing with the return of a supporting character from the beginning. When the mysterious creature attacks first started happening, Sandra Bullock's very pregnant Malorie was just leaving the doctor's office with her sister Jessica (Sarah Paulson). The doctor treating Malorie was Dr. Lapham, played by Parminder Nagra (E.R., The Blacklist, S.H.I.E.L.D.). At the end of the film -- five years later -- Malorie ran into Dr. Lapham again at the school for the blind that served as a sanctuary for survivors.

Bird Box director Susanne Bier explained why Dr. Lapham made that surprise return to the story:

I felt that it needed some real hope. And I thought having someone else survive, and having someone who she met at a point where she was in a kind of rejecting life, and having to meet at that point [where she's embracing it] --- I felt was a really warm and hopeful element to the ending. And it also makes us think, 'Oh, there are other survivors!' I think it does infuse the ending with a kind of grander hope than if she had not been there.

It also kind of makes me wish Malorie had just stuck with Dr. Lapham. They were together on the same day this all started, and who knows how much Malorie's life would've been different if she'd followed Dr. L's path. Then again, we don't know when the doc got to the sanctuary, or how tough her own journey was. And if Malorie took that shortcut, 1) the movie wouldn't be long or dramatic enough, 2) she would've never had Girl in her life, and 3) she never would've gotten to meet Tom (Trevante Rhodes) or named Boy after him.

And, as Susanne Bier told People, it does bring Malorie's story full circle to go from Dr. Lapham seeing Malorie has a pregnant cynic to Dr. Lapham seeing Malorie has a hopeful mother.

The ending does partly match the ending of Josh Malerman's 2014 Bird Box novel. Malorie and the kids end up at Rick's sanctuary. He's said to be one of 108 people in a refuge with no windows. The film is slightly different, and adds the Dr. Lapham angle to bring Malorie that familiarity and tie her arc together.

Bird Box ends on a hopeful note, but they are still living in a world with these unseen monsters around. How will they have enough food to feed everyone? Do they have to stay there forever? Is there a reason why the monsters showed up, or a cure to make them go away?

There are also the insane people who keep trying to force survivors to take off their blindfolds and see the creatures. Blind survivors can't see the creatures, of course, but Malorie and the kids were just blindfolded, so they may still be faced with that danger if they ever leave the sanctuary.

So there may be ideas to tackle if there's a sequel. Since Netflix said Bird Box set a new record for 7-day viewing -- and the film took the internet by storm with memes, to the point that Netflix had to step in to advise caution -- you have to imagine a sequel might be coming.

People asked Susanne Bier about that, and she deflected, saying they only just finished this film and they want to enjoy it for now. But don't be surprised if that surprise ending leads to a new beginning for this story -- with or without Sandra Bullock's Malorie as the lead character.
