No, James Wan Isn't Contracted For An Aquaman Sequel

Next weekend sees the release of Aquaman from director James Wan. By and large, the reviews for the film seem to indicate that the acclaimed director has delivered one of the best DCEU films to date. So naturally, assuming Aquaman is a success at the box office, many fans will want to see James Wan back in the director's chair to helm a potential sequel. Not so fast though, because Wan isn't contracted for an Aquaman sequel, as he explained:

This is my only one that I've signed up to do. We'll see. Let's not talk about sequels before this one's even come out yet.

Aquaman isn't even officially out yet, so James Wan wants to keep the focus on this film before discussing the possibility of sequels. That's understandable, after an exhausting two years of making Aquaman. He's probably ready for a rest, and doesn't want to assume a sequel will happen before knowing how the first film performs. However, Wan did reveal to Variety that he is not currently signed on to direct any other Aquaman movies.

That isn't the same as him saying he doesn't want to direct any others, or that he is done with the franchise. There could be an Aquaman 2 and James Wan could still direct it, but contractually speaking, he is not obligated to return to Atlantis.

This is obviously very notable, because if Aquaman is successful and Warner Bros. decides to make a second one, there will be the open question of who is going to direct it until James Wan officially returns or the studio gets somebody else.

The situation is somewhat reminiscent of what happened with Wonder Woman. Warner Bros. only signed on Patty Jenkins for the first film. The, when Wonder Woman was a critical and commercial smash hit, the studio had to back up the money truck to bring her back.

The outlook on Aquaman isn't quite as rosy as Wonder Woman critically, but the reviews are largely positive thus far and no doubt audiences who like the film will want to see James Wan return to play in the world that he so painstakingly created.

On the other hand, James Wan is a talented director who made his mark in horror before moving on to Furious 7 and then the world of superheroes, so it would also be interesting to see him tackle something else new -- and he may want to. Then again, he has also shown interest in a horror take on Batman as well as Blade, so maybe he'll stay in the comic book realm and just do something different. Time will tell.

Early indicators at the box office are good for Aquaman with the film tracking at a $65 million opening weekend against stiff competition. In addition to that, Aquaman has already surpassed Wonder Woman's entire run in the all-important Chinese market.

Those signs bode well for an Aquaman 2, if that's in DC's plans, but James Wan returning to make it is not a certainty.

For reasons that are difficult to understand, one of the most controversial film franchises in recent years has been the supernatural comedy Ghostbusters. The series saw a reboot a couple years ago that recast this leads with four female comedians, a move that was met with a significant backlash. Now, yet another Ghostbusters movie is on the way, but it won't be a sequel to the last one, but instead a sequel to the original pair from the 1980s. Melissa McCarthy was one of the stars of the recent reboot and she says she has no issues with the new film and she's looking forward to seeing it. According to McCarthy...

While many fans of the various incarnations of Ghostbusters have drawn battle lines over the franchise, Melissa McCarthy isn't interested in getting involved in all that it seems. She says she's just happy to see people making movies and doesn't seem to mind so much what they're about.

McCarthy says she's already spoken to Jason Reitman, the co-writer and director of the upcoming project, which will be set in the original Ghostbusters universe. She also reiterates comments that Reitman has made, that this idea is one that he's had for quite some time, and finally took the time to turn into an actual screenplay.

Melissa McCarthy's reaction to ET is slightly different that that of one of her Ghostbusters co-stars. Leslie Jones has called the fact that the franchise has turned back to its origins so quickly after the reboot, "insulting."

In the end, this is the best possible response. There's no reason that people can't like all of the Ghostbusters movies and can't hope that the film set for release next year is also good. If McCarthy had anything negative to say about the new movie it would likely only feed those who were critical of the reboot anyway, so there's not a lot of value in it.

At this point, little is known about the new movie beyond the fact that it will take place as a direct sequel to Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. The expectation is that some or all of the original Ghostbusters cast who are still with us will appear in the film, though in what capacity we don't know. The word on the street is that the main cast of the film will be a new generation of young Ghostbusters, with the original cast acting as mentors.

This likely won't be the last thing we hear in the ongoing battle of the Ghostbusters. While Jason Reitman has also tried to defuse tension between fans, there will likely continue to be a lot of strong opinions at least until we see the new Ghostbusters next summer.

The upcoming slate, with Shazam, Joker, Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey, feels like were on the right track. We have the right people in the right jobs working on it. The universe isnt as connected as we thought it was going to be five years ago. Youre seeing much more focus on individual experiences around individual characters. Thats not to say we wont at some point come back to that notion of a more connected universe. But it feels like thats the right strategy for us right now.

With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League being two of DC's early productions, it was clear that the plan was to bring all of DC's major comic heroes out together and make the interconnected universe a major part of the brand.

It was the exact opposite approach that Marvel took when it first began the MCU, making stories for all of the individual Avengers before bringing them together for a major crossover movie. DC may have been trying to simply differentiate itself and not copy the Marvel formula or it may have believed that bringing the Justice League together early was truly the right path, but it seems that now, as Kevin Tsujihara tells the L.A. Times, the plan is to go back to those individual stories.

And what's most interesting is that, for the most part, we're not talking about solo films for the Justice League, but entirely new characters. Wonder Woman is getting a sequel and we expect Batman to get a new movie as well, but Shazam!, Joker and Birds of Prey, the films on the way soonest will all focus on entirely different characters.

We know that, at least in the case of Shazam!, the film isn't entirely without aspects of crossover. The fact that the Justice League heroes exist in the world is part of the story, and there was reportedly even an attempt to get Henry Cavill to cameo, though it seems that isn't happening.

Joker as far as we're aware, isn't even part of the existing DC universe as the character portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix isn't the same one played by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad.

This statement makes it sound like, at this point, there are no real plans for another major crossover with DC. Justice League left us with a post credits scene that indicated that the Justice League would have an entire team of villains to take on at some point in the future, though now one has to wonder when we'll actually see that.

William Goldman was probably my favorite writer in the world, though I had never met him. The prolific author and screenwriter is still part of the cultural lexicon, although some of his biggest movies came out decades ago. Tragically, this week William Goldman passed away at his home in Manhattan. He was 87 years of age at the time of his death.

News that William Goldman had died broke Friday, but the Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid Oscar winner reportedly died at his home on Thursday. His family and friends were present and his death wasn't sudden. Deadline reports he had not been well for some time and that his health had begun to fail sometime over the summer this year.

His partner Susan Burden told the NY Times that he had colon cancer and pneumonia at the time of his death.

There have been myriad screenwriters in Hollywood over the years, but not nearly as many are able to make quite the impact that William Goldman did. The man was an Oscar winner not once but twice, nabbing the coveted statue for both the aforementioned Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All The President's Men.

He possibly most famously wrote the novel The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure in 1973. More than a decade later, Rob Reiner enlisted him to write the screenplay for The Princess Bride. The movie would not go on to do big business at the box office despite positive reviews; nonetheless, it is a classic comedy over 30 years later. In 2016 that movie was inducted in the National Film Registry, joining the likes of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (joined 2003).

William Goldman would recall in a book by Richard Andersen that he had gotten more mail about The Princess Bride than any of his other projects combined, noting his fans wrote "all kinds of strange outpouring letters."

It wasn't just those projects that are fan favorites. Many of William Goldman's other screenplays are well-remembered. He penned Chaplin, the 1992 film that landed Robert Downey Jr. an Oscar nod. He also wrote the 1975 screenplay for The Stepford Wives. Beyond that, he was the talent behind Heat, Misery, Marathon Man, The Ghost and the Darkness, and Hearts in Atlantis.

In the business he was a juggernaut with a career spanning decades beginning in the 1960s. He continued working into the early 21st Century with Hearts in Atlantas (2001) and Dreamcatcher (2003).

Yet, in this moment it's The Princess Bride that is still striking and not because of the Sicilian's laughter or the R.O.U.S.' but for one small, profound quote he wrote: "Life isn't fair, it's just fairer than death, that's all."

William Goldman, you'll be missed.
