Why Blade's Blood Club Scene Looked So Cool, According To The Cinematographer

While superhero movies have become commonplace through the myriad cinematic universes currently in theaters, there was a time when they were a relatively new concept. And as far as Marvel comics goes, the first live-action adaptation was not Iron Man, but 1998's Blade. Starring Wesley Snipes as the titular half-vampire and dark hero, Blade ended up growing into a bonafide trilogy before Marvel began really producing live-action adaptations. The first film set up the franchise's world with a rave scene, where blood sprayed from from the sprinklers, and the vampires revealed themselves to the audience. Now we know how they made the blood look so great, thanks to cinematographer Theo Van de Sande. As he tells it,

What we did in creating the Blood Club, it had a lot of technical elements to deliver a feel of something never seen. We wanted to give the blood a particulation, so I used a strobe light that was connected to the camera. Because of that, the blood becomes very stylistic due to the short exposure and gives a very harsh feel to it. Also, I created a [new] camera, one designed with an anamorphic lens equipped with a viewfinder, so we could do a lot of hand-held in the action scenes. The choice to do it anamorphic gives it more impact.

Well, this process certainly seems complicated. While Blade's thrilling opening sequence may come off polished and easy, it turns out that it was a technical nightmare on set. In order to properly light the scene and feature the blood, some creative solutions were needed. This includes the use of a strobe light on the camera, as well as oodles of fake blood.

Theo Van de Sande's comments to Syfy show just how much work goes into action sequences, especially when supernatural or superheroic elements are added. Comic book adaptations have to be larger than life, and that includes Blade's dark and bloody world. And ultimately it work that paid off, as Blade's opening sequence is creepy as hell, and also sets up the perfect entrance for the title character. As a reminder, check it out below.

Seriously, how cool is that? Theo Van de Sande did a great job filming the scene and making it as unnerving as possible. And just when the villainy and blood sucking was about to begin, the film's hero shows up, and promptly starts swinging his sword to take out the undead. This isn't the MCU you're used to.It should be interesting to see if Blade ever makes it into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There's definitely fan interest, but could they ever replace Wesley Snipes? Snipes certainly doesn't seem to think so. Be sure to check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Chris Pratt And More Celebrities Have Screened Crazy Rich Asians, Heres What They Think

Last Wednesday saw the release of Crazy Rich Asians, the cinematic adaptation of Kevin Kwan's novel of the same name, as well as the first Hollywood production to star an all-Asian cast in over two decades. Along with exceeding its commercial expectations, the movie has been met with widespread critical praise, and it has a lot of celebrities in its corner. Over the last few days, folks in the entertainment industry have been dishing out praise for Crazy Rich Asians, like Chris Pratt, who commended the movie while simultaneously taking a subtle shot at the two movies he's starred in this year, Avengers: Infinity War and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Aquaman director James Wan dropped even more praise on Crazy Rich Asians, noting how nice it was to see a whole cast that looked like him in a Hollywood movie for the first time, and he made sure to compliment actors Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Michelle Yeoh, and well as director John M. Chu, in a follow-up tweet.

Over in the music industry, pop star Justin Bieber let his followers know to catch Crazy Rich Asians in theaters, and also congratulated John M. Chu on the finished product.

Back in acting land, Ocean's 8 star Mindy Kaling congratulated Crazy Rich Asians for its theatrical performance after five days, noting how it combined two of her favorite things.

Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin also threw his praise for Crazy Rich Asians into the mix, as well as thanked the people who bought a ticket to the movie over the weekend.

Finally, Shadowhunters star Katherine McNamara congratulated Crazy Rich Asians for its commercial performance as well, as it's made over $34 million domestically so far.

Along with the previously mentioned actors, Crazy Rich Asians' includes Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Ken Jeong, Nico Santos and Ronny Chieng, among many others. The original book was the first story in a trilogy, and while nothing is official yet, there has already talk about making a sequel based on the second novel, China Rich Girlfriend (with Rich People Problems being the final installment).

You can learn what CinemaBlend thought of Crazy Rich Asians by reading our review, and stay tuned for continuing coverage about the movie. In the meantime, be sure to look through our 2018 release schedule to find out what other movies are hitting theaters later this year.

One Spider-Man 3 Actor Defends Topher Grace's Venom

One Spider-Man 3 Actor Defends Topher Grace's Venom

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 is widely viewed as one of the worst cinematic outings for the web crawler. Similar to the X-Men series that started out strong for the first two outings but failed to close properly, Spider-Man 3 proved to be a disappointing entry that eventually led to a reboot of the franchise. One of the biggest failures in a film overstuffed with villains was the portrayal of Venom. While many feel Topher Grace was woefully miscast as Eddie Brock, one of the actor's co-stars defended his performance. Actor Thomas Haden Church, who played Sandman in the film, had this to say about Topher Grace's Venom:

The studio felt like they had me, they had Franco's story continuing, and they were like, we need one more that's more of a millennial. And that's how Venom and Topher Grace came into the picture. And by the way, I thought Topher was great in the movie and Venom is a pretty scary animal. And that was the evolution of that. I was thrilled, man.

Thomas Haden Church's assessment of the studio's thinking here is interesting. The way he phrases it while speaking to JoBlo, he makes it sound very much like the studio's thinking was that it would need another villain to represent a different demographic versus adding the character because that is what the story called for. Frankly, that's sort of how Venom felt in the film. The character seemed tacked on more out of obligation than any narrative reason. Thomas Haden Church's Sandman had a real emotional arc, but it was as if they studio felt he wasn't flashy enough alone. Personally, I found Topher Grace somewhat cheesy in the role, but given the tone of the rest of the film, I have to think that this was more a directorial choice than any sort of failure on the actor's part. Topher Grace did what he could with what he was given, and he wasn't necessarily bad, he just didn't feel like Eddie Brock.

Spider-Man 3's failure was not due to any one single element, but a myriad of factors that combined to crush the film under their weight, including too many villains, a mishandled Gwen Stacy and the cringe-inducing Emo Peter Parker. I think that Topher Grace's Venom stands out in such a negative way because of the love and excitement people have about the character. Venom, while not necessarily being the most complex villain in history, looks incredibly cool, and realizing that on film was an exciting prospect. Venom is the kind of character that you're immediately sold on as a kid as soon as you see him. Sadly, Venom was something of an afterthought in Spider-Man 3, and many fans would have preferred Venom as the main or only villain.

Comic book film history is full of missteps and outright disasters, with Topher Grace's Venom and Spider-Man 3 among them. But each of these missteps provides a lesson for future comic book films. Venom will get another chance to live up to fan expectations this fall when the character returns to the big screen with Tom Hardy taking on the role of Eddie Brock. This time, the character will not be getting second billing either. Instead of squaring off with Spider-Man, Venom will be going full anti-hero as the star of the film. If nothing else, the Spider-Man 3 portrayal of Venom looked cool for the time, and hopefully the symbiote suit will look even more frightening and awesome a decade later. Venom hits theaters on October 5.

Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins has "clear plans" for what she'd do with Wonder Woman 3. Despite some early struggles, Warner Bros. and DC Films found their first true success with 2017's Wonder Woman. The Gal Gadot-led solo film shattered Hollywood's glass ceiling and broke box office records during its lengthy theatrical run.

The first official footage of the film was released by Illumination Entertainment as a TV spot on February 9, 2018, to capitalize on the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. 18 of 23 found this interesting Interesting?
