Why Making The Porgs Was Terrifying, According To Star Wars' Neal Scanlan

The Star Wars franchise is chock full of alien species that fans have fallen in love with over the years. Between the wookies and the tauntauns, there's no shortage of weird creatures to populate these bizarre worlds. Star Wars: The Last Jedi added to that collection of beasts with the introduction of the porgs, but it turns out that developing the aliens proved to be a daunting and stressful part of the film's development. Star Wars creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan opened up in a recent interview and explained:

Doing the porgs actually was terrifying, because you have a fear that if you get it wrong all the fans are going to sort of hate you forever quite rightly... as soon as we heard there was a warm reaction to them, it's great.

Neal Scanlan has a point. The puffin-inspired porgs became one of the most talked about aspects of Star Wars: The Last Jedi prior to the film's debut last December. The reaction was generally warm, but before the film actually premiered, there was a constant conversation online about how they would influence the overall tone of the movie. That said, the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi came and went, and the opinion towards them appears to remain "warm."

We have already seen examples of this in the history of the Star Wars lore. Specifically, the Ewoks introduced in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi have become one of the more divisive elements of Star Wars fiction since the film was released. Some people love them for the ways in which they expand the overarching mythology, while other fans have criticized them for adding too much lightheartedness to the third installment in the original trilogy.

Of course, one thing not specifically mentioned in Neal Scanlan's comments to ET about the development of Star Wars: The Last Jedi's porgs is the worst-case scenario. Star Wars has been responsible for some magnificent creatures over the years, but if handled wrong, the porgs could've quickly fallen into the infamous Jar Jar Binks category of misfires.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will debut on Digital HD on March 13, and the DVD and Blu-ray versions of the film will hit shelves two weeks later on March 27. Looking ahead at the rest of the Star Wars franchise, Solo: A Star Wars Story will premiere in theaters later this year on May 25, and Star Wars: Episode IX will hit theaters on December 20, 2019.





The Final Destination franchise was good to New Line, with five films from the first in 2000 to the last, Final Destination 5, in 2011, grossing almost $700 million worldwide on small budgets. That low budget model is the bread and butter of the horror genre, and New Line has found recent success with it via its highly lucrative Conjuring Universe.

Final Deadpool 2 Trailer Is Explosive And Hysterical, Watch It Now

The final trailer tends to be the most action-packed. The effects are finished. The jokes are finalized. The final bow is being placed on the whole gift, and the movie is heading to cinemas. That's the case with this last trailer for David Leitch's Deadpool 2, which is crammed with violence and thrills, as well as some killer self-referential punchlines. Watch it now!

Quick, rank your favorite jabs from the trailer! Mine has to be when Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) calls Cable (Josh Brolin) "One-Eyed Willy," a classic Goonies reference thrown back in Brolin's face. But because Deadpool is propping up 21st Century Fox's cinematic universe, I equally enjoyed the digs at Marvel -- when Brolin is called Thanos -- and that sweet swipe at DC for being so damn dark.

The final trailer for Deadpool 2 also makes it clear that Cable (Josh Brolin) and Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) are on opposite sides of a race to secure a mysterious kid (Julian Dennison), though it's for reasons we can't quite figure out yet. We know that Cable time travels back to our era from a ravaged future, so in classic Terminator fashion, Dennison's character, Russell, might hold the key to stopping whatever war Cable has been fighting in the future. It's also curious why Deadpool would even WANT to help this kid. He's pretty self-serving, so the fact that he wants to put a team together at all is surprising.

Ah yes, the team. This final trailer does confirm the names of the characters being played by the likes of Terry Crews (Bedlam), Lewis Tan (Shatterstar) and Rob Delaney. The comedian is poised to steal the show as he's playing Peter, a normal guy with no powers who just saw Deadpool's ad looking for teammates and signed on. The shot of him parachuting down into battle wearing his best Suburban Dad outfit made me laugh out loud.

After years stuck in development hell, Bill and Ted Face The Music finally got some good news last week. An announcement from Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter confirmed that the titular duo will be back in a second sequel that will be hitting theaters next year, and revealed that production is underway. Obviously we still have a lot of questions about the project, but one that has now been answered is that actor William Sadler will be reprising his role as Death in the comedy.

Like the aforementioned release date announcement, this news comes to us from the official Bill & Ted 3 Twitter account, which revealed the casting while writing "For those who have been asking, @Wm_Sadler will totally be reprising his role!" No details were offered beyond that, and we still don't know how big his part in the story will be, but we're still giving ourselves licence to be excited.

William Sadler's Death wasn't featured in the first Bill and Ted movie, 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, but instead was introduced as an antagonist-turned-protagonist in the 1991 sequel Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. Over the course of that film he goes from offering to play Bill and Ted in a game in exchange for their souls, to being a key member of the rock band Wyld Stallyns - the greatest band the universe has ever known and the foundation of a Utopian society.

Twenty-eight years is a long time to wait before reprising a role, especially an ageless one like Death. Fortunately, William Sadler has an ally on his side: super heavy makeup. As you can tell from the image above, his face is going to be so covered up that you won't be able to tell if he's 30 or 60.

It's very possible that this won't be the last time we hear about an actor returning to reprise a role in Bill and Ted Face The Music, but, sadly, one character we know won't be showing up is Rufus. Though he was a key part of both Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, George Carlin passed away in 2008, and the new movie has decided not to recast the part. Instead, according to the official Twitter account, his absence will be a big part of the movie thematically:

Based on a script by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, and directed by Dean Parisot, Bill & Ted Face The Music will catch up with the titular characters not as world-class rock stars, but instead as struggling middle-aged dads who can't figure out how to fulfill their destiny. They had been told as teens that they were supposed to write a song that would save the universe, but they simply can't get it together. With the movie now filming, hopefully more details will be coming soon, including more casting announcements.
