The Reason Iago Speaks Very Differently In The New Aladdin, According To Guy Ritchie

There are a lot of classic elements of the animated Aladdin still present in the new remake from the colorful antics of the genie, to all the songs that have been stuck in your head for the last 27 years but one aspect that is changed quite a bit is the presence of Iago. The parrot is still the right hand of the power-hungry Jafar, and regularly feeds him information that drives the plot forward, but as a character he is very different than what fans are familiar with. Rather than being an abrasive animal sidekick brought to life with the voice of Gilbert Gottfried, hes instead, well a parrot.

Its an interesting choice that the film makes, particularly because there are still many other magical elements in play, but there is a good reason why it was done. According to director Guy Ritchie, a more anthropomorphic version of Iago in the new Aladdin simply didnt fit as the story was brought from animation to live-action, and just didnt feel right within the presentation.

I brought up the character when I recently sat down with Guy Ritchie at the Los Angeles press day for Aladdin, asking how those kinds of decisions were made, and he explained,

Good question, actually, and one I don't mind talking about, this one, at all. It's funny what you can get away with in an animated production that can't, my feeling is, that you can't get away with in quite the same way in live action. So although you still got magic carpets and blue genies coming out of bottles, [it] still has to be rooted in some form of reality. It's hard if you have a parrot who has paragraphs of dialogue. Somehow it just sits uncomfortably in a live action production.

Going for a more appropriate adaptation of the character, Aladdin has the new Iago act much more like a scarlet macaw that you would find in real life, albeit with a slightly enhanced ability to speak (he has the occasional line, but nothing on the level of what we hear in the 1992 movie). Physically hes entirely a digital creation, and the voice is done by Alan Tudyk who has become a Disney regular in recent years, with parts in Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Moana, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Ralph Breaks The Internet.

Unlike the human characters, which were easy to adapt from medium to medium, Aladdins animals presented a particular puzzle for the filmmakers, but it was a code they eventually cracked. It was all about finding what Guy Ritchie referred to as the sweet spot where things didnt seem out of place or two extreme. Said the director,

There was a sweet spot that we found between animals in their animation or articulation before you went too far and then you went, 'Oh, hold on. This is live action.' But as I say, you're talking about wishes and genies, yet somehow there's a position that the mind occupies that accepts certain amount of fancy without becoming absurd.

The Fast And Furious Spinoff Is Adding Idris Elba

Following The Fate of the Furious' release last year, the Fast and Furious franchise is diverging onto two paths. Fast & Furious 9 is still scheduled for release in 2020, but before that, Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw will team up for the appropriately titled spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. With principal photography beginning in the coming weeks, casting information is finally starting to trickle in, and the latest news is that Idris Elba will be joining the Hobbs and Shaw cast.

According to Variety, Idris Elba is in final negotiations to board Hobbs and Shaw as the spinoff's main villain, though details about this character were revealed. Once all the paperwork is in order, Elba would be the fourth actor to be added to this movie, as it was reported earlier this week that The Crown's Vanessa Kirby is joining Hobbs and Shaw to play Deckard Shaw's sister, an MI-5 agent.

Well-known on TV for his performances as Stringer Bell and John Luther in The Wire and Luther, respectively, Idris Elba's movie career has taken off over the last decade with blockbusters like the Thor trilogy, Pacific Rim, Star Trek Beyond and The Jungle Book. In those latter two movies, he served as the main antagonist, so Hobbs and Shaw won't be his first go-around with giving cinematic heroes trouble. Elba is also another example of high caliber actors who have lent their talents to the Fast and Furious movies in recent years, like Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell and Charlize Theron.

So far no official plot details for Hobbs and Shaw have been disclosed yet, other than the fact that Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw will be splitting off from the main Fast and Furious cast to go on their own adventure and build on the chemistry they established in The Fate of the Furious. Unofficially, in addition to Deckard (and Owen) Shaw's sister playing a role in the spinoff, it's rumored that Hobbs' mother and five brothers will be introduced, with "Jonah" Hobbs reportedly playing a big role. As for Idris Elba's character, it was also rumored that Hobbs and Shaw's main antagonist is a mysterious, British international terrorist named "Mr. Null" who dresses in all black. This is definitely a role that Elba could pull off, but until more information comes in, we can't discount that he might be playing someone else, like a corrupt government figure.

Directed by Deadpool 2's David Leitch and written by longtime Fast and Furious contributor Chris Morgan, Hobbs and Shaw races into theaters on August 2, 2019, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage about its development. What It Was Like Filming Outlaw Kings Muddy, Bloody Battle Sequences

We've seen many different kinds of war movies set throughout all eras of society, but few get as sincerely chaotic as David Mackenzie's upcoming Outlaw King. Not only is it a film featuring the execution of guerilla tactics, but the cinematography is specifically designed to highlight the insanity that is battle. It's a standout element of production, and something I got to talk about with the director and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chris Pine:

Last month I joined members of the press flying out to Edinburgh, Scotland, where I sat down with the Outlaw King director and cast to talk about the new movie. It was in both my interviews with David Mackenzie and Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chris Pine that the subject of the chaotic battle scenes came up, and they explained how it was all brought to life.

Speaking from the actors perspective, Aaron Taylor-Johnson admitted that it was a taxing experience to create the mayhem-filled sequences of Outlaw King -- which includes a fire-filled midnight ambush, and a fight set in what's basically a giant mud pit. Tough as it was, though, it was all part of the director's vision, and that's what they signed up for. Said Taylor-Johnson,

No, it was pretty chaotic, and relentless, and grueling. And I think that's again, Mackenzie's way of filmmaking. He likes to capture that essence, and therefore creates that kind of environment where it is authentic and real and chaotic.

When I spoke with David Mackenzie later in the day, he confirmed that his personal filmmaking style isn't one that is all about structure. While making the battle sequences he had multiple cameras running, and apparently never explicitly explained to his performers what was being captured -- instead letting them just exist in the atmosphere:

Well, as the director, I like things to be very loose. I liked my actors to improvise a bit. I like to, you know, not have a very big difference between when we're on and when we're off, not really to know, and for everyone to inhabit the reality of the environment in particular location.

Outlaw King is the second collaboration between David Mackenzie and Chris Pine after their work on the Oscar-nominated Hell Or High Water. This time around Pine is playing Robert The Bruce, a noble Earl who picked up the revolutionary torch left by William Wallace in 14th century Scotland. In the name of freedom, and not wanting to live under the boot heel of England's King Edward I (Stephen Dillane), Robert led his small resistance group (including Aaron Taylor-Johnson's James Douglas, Lord of Douglas) in a battle against tyranny, waging a bloody war and being declared by his followers as the Outlaw King.

The film makes you feel like you are on the battlefield right alongside Robert The Bruce and his men, and a great deal of credit goes to the cinematographer -- who has some experience with capturing reality. As Aaron Taylor Johnson explained, it was shot by Barry Ackroyd, who not only has a background in documentaries, but also visceral thrillers like The Hurt Locker and United 93.

Barry Ackroyd shot this, and his whole background is documentary filmmaking. So it felt like we were a pack of wild animals, and it was capture what you can and there were moments of realism.

As David Mackenzie explained, there was simultaneously every effort made to make sure the set of Outlaw King was as safe as possible, including not only the stunt work, but also all of the performing with the horses. At the same time though, if you watch the film and feel like you're watching madness unfold, then that means Mackenzie accomplished his mission.

Following its premiere earlier this fall at the Toronto International Film Festival, Outlaw King will soon be arriving for consumption -- but it won't be at your local cineplex. Instead, Netflix subscribers will find it available to stream this Friday, November 9th. DC's Zachary Levi Shows Off His Shazam! Muscles In 'Thirst Trappy' Video

Someone better tell Henry Cavill he has some Instagram muscle shot competition out there from a fellow DC Comics superhero. Shazam! is still picking up money at the box office, even in a post-Endgame world, and Zachary Levi is doing his part to keep the attention on DC (or at least himself) as Marvel takes over the globe.

Zachary Levi recently posted a pretty shameless plug for his Flow Supplements brand -- and I say shameless because he knew he was getting his Shazam! fans in a tizzy with his shirtless workout video. He added a note at the end of his caption acknowledging "Also, fine, maybe the video is a little 'thirst-trappy', so sue me." Judge for yourself:

Chuck alum Zachary Levi had plenty of fans before Shazam! but he is an outright superstar now, and the fan comments on his post are hilarious. One fan wrote "NSFW, dude! A little warning would be nice next time."

Normally I say leave the intense workout videos to The Rock and Chris Hemsworth, but Zachary Levi was basically posting an ad for his supplements, and that directly relates to working out. So he has an excuse.

As you might imagine, Zachary Levi had to spend a lot of time at the gym to train for Shazam! with that costume showing off the usual amounts of superhero bod. At least he got to eat a lot, though, to build muscle mass -- saying he was at the gym 5-6 days a week and ate 3,500-3,700 calories a day. But they had to be "clean calories," not leftover Easter candy or ice cream.

Zachary Levi likes to keep in touch with Shazam! fans by posting messages and answering questions. Several months ago, he answered a fan's question on eating broccoli for breakfast while making Shazam! He said he basically ate the same macros all day long -- a combination of meat and veggies five times a day. Apparently he used to eat a lot of eggs but gave them up due to an intolerance of some kind.

He may have to return to that diet and exercise routine fairly soon. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will be joining the Shazam! world as Black Adam and he said he thought they'd start filming the Black Adam movie in about a year. Due to the ages of the younger Shazam! stars, the producers said they might move into sequel production sooner rather than later so the "kids" don't start looking older than Zachary Levi.

It is Superhero Season at the box office, with the MCU's Captain Marvel and DC's Shazam! followed now by Marvel's Avengers: Endgame. Those costumes show every flaw, so stars work hard to make it look like their human physiques are as superheroic as the characters they play (even though many of the stars are now above 50). After working so hard, I can't really blame them too much for wanting to show off the results on Instagram. If I had a personal trainer getting me in shape, or if I bothered getting myself in shape, I might show it off too.
