Why Phase 3 Is Marvel's Best Phase So Far

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has come a long way since Tony Stark donned his first suit of armor back in Jon Favreau's Iron Man. With almost three phases completed, it's becoming clearer that Marvel Studios knows how to branch out in new directions and try new things with each passing year. In fact, now that we're on the tail end of Phase 3, it has become evident that the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is also its best because of Marvel's willingness to embrace diversity in all of its forms.

To be clear, I'm not just highlighting the increasing diversity of Marvel's heroic roster -- though the introductions of heroes like Black Panther, The Wasp and the eventual debut of Carol Danvers next year do help. Instead, I'm actually referring to a perceived increase in diversity of thought and unique filmmaking style. In the earliest days of Phase 1, Marvel movies (largely by necessity) had to play to clich character beats and well-known story formats in order to get audiences familiar with the landscape of the MCU. In fact, if you go back to watch some of the films that led up to the release of The Avengers, you may find yourself surprised by how many of them had the idea of a lone, exceptional, macho hero overcoming a broadly evil antagonist by punching their way out of a situation. It was a formula you could set your watch to back then.

Things got slightly better when Phase 2 kicked off in 2013 with Iron Man 3. Though the heroes remained sort of indistinguishable from one another in terms of personality, Marvel Studios started branching out and trying new things with its narrative structure. This included embracing Shane Black buddy movie tropes for the third Iron Man movie, the political thriller style for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and even the heist movie format for the first Ant-Man movie. That might also explain why Thor: The Dark World is still widely viewed as the weakest Marvel movie (and by extension, the weakest Phase 2 movie) to date; it arguably feels the most like a Phase 1 movie, with little discernible style to call its own.

That said, Phase 2 still had its own fair share of problems that bogged it down. Even though films like The Winter Soldier and Ant-Man (just to name a couple) played with genre, Phase 2's heroes were still fronted by brooding, loner heroes. Sure, some could crack wise more than others, but they were still mostly adult white male heroes who punched their way out of trouble.

Then Phase 3 debuted, kicking off with a movie that defined the differences between the Marvel heroes: Captain America: Civil War. Following the fracturing of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, we got Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther, all of them leading up to the debut of Avengers: Infinity War. Heroes introduced in Phase 3 were given far more distinct personality traits (for example: Stephen Strange outsmarts Dormammu in his solo film, while Peter Parker cries in terror when he gets trapped under rubble in his), while the returning heroes like Thor and The Guardians receive more eccentricities that build on the foundations of their earlier movies.

Ultimately, that's why Phase 3 seems to work better than any other Phase that Marvel has offered us so far. The foundational personalities and methodologies of each hero seem to become more distinct and pronounced with each passing year. A fear associated with the concept of "superhero fatigue" is the notion that superheroes are all the same. However, if Marvel can continue defining the differences in the styles and genres of each hero's particular sub-franchise, then there's arguably no reason to assume that the MCU cannot continue for years to come and continue staying as fresh as ever long after the release of Avengers 4 next year.

Some Guy Tried To Steal Frances McDormand's Oscar Last Night

Frances McDormand won her second Academy Award at last night's Oscars for her performance in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. When she took the stage to accept the award, the brilliant actress delivered the most impassioned and talked about speech of the night. But after she stole the show, someone apparently decided to try and steal Frances McDormand's Oscar at the Governors Ball. Thankfully, the thief was deterred and Frances McDormand got her Oscar back. I know everyone in Hollywood wants an Oscar, but stealing one seems a bit extreme. Take a look below to see the Oscar thief who allegedly tried to make off with the coveted golden statue.

Based on the Twitter post from New York Times reporter Cara Buckley, a heroic photographer got the Oscar back from the thief who then disappeared back into a sea of penguin suits. Well, apparently he wasn't that great at disappearing, because right when I was about to call for a few prominent billboards with this photo to help catch the suspect, there came news that the would-be thief has already been caught. According to Deadline, the man has been identified as Terry Bryant, who was arrested late last night and is facing a charge of felony grand theft. His bail has been set at $20,000.

Now, I would say that he might have gotten away with it if it weren't for that pesky photographer, but Terry Bryant shot a video of himself with the award at the Governors Ball, wherein he tells everyone within earshot that the Oscar is his and he can't believe he won. Not the best strategy if he wanted to actually get away with it. The man apparently had a ticket to the event, but if I had to guess he will not be invited back next year. This whole thing is quite baffling (and idiotic to be honest). Dude steals an Oscar that he didn't earn and claims it's his, which is easily refutable, to what, get some social media traction or get invited to an Oscar party? He also did seemingly everything in his power to get caught. An _Ocean's 8-_level heist this was not.

It's a shame that such nonsense came out of a night meant to honor the magic of movies and the amazing artists who bring them to life. While Frances McDormand may have brushed the whole situation off when it happened -- she reportedly said to let him go -- it is great that she got her Oscar back. No doubt the Academy would have gotten her another one, but it's still the principle of the thing. In a statement to various outlets, a rep for Frances McDormand noted that the actress was reunited with her well-earned statue and that the two were enjoying some In-N-Out, so all's well that ends well.

The Incredible Amount Of Money Aquaman Should Ultimately Make Worldwide

DC movies, generally speaking, have never had a problem making money at the box office, but the performance of Aquaman has still been something of a surprise. The character, who has frequently been the butt of jokes among comics fans, has done better than every other DC film, and several Marvel offerings as well. Now that the movie has finally opened in Japan, it's become a hit there too. As the film's theatrical run now begins its final wind down, it looks like the king of the seven seas is going to end up with a global box office tally somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.15 billion.

That will make Aquaman the 20th highest grossing film in history, just behind Captain America: Civil War, so if the movie does only slightly better than Forbes is predicting, it could overcome that Marvel movie before its done. While the billion dollar box office club has been steadily growing, it's still a pretty elite group. Fewer than 40 movies are in it and Aquaman has done better than most of them.

It's clear that nobody was predicting Aquaman to do so well. Otherwise, we would have seen the movie get a prime summer release date rather than the end of the year slot that it got. However, the good news is that release dates don't dictate success on their own and the movie was still able to put up huge numbers. Aquaman is the highest grossing DC movie ever already, out-grossing not only every other movie in the current franchise, but also Christopher Nolan's Batman movies. The Dark Knight Rises had been the previous record holder. Both Rises and The Dark Knight are the only other DC properties to break the $1 billion mark.

It's not shocking that DC and Warner Bros. are already reportedly planning a future to this corner of the larger franchise. While no direct sequel talks have reportedly started yet, we know it's only a matter of time before James Wan's phone rings. There's also word that a spin-off focusing on the characters of The Trench, is reportedly in early development.

The bar has now been set for the rest of the DC Universe. While it will be tough for any of DC's upcoming movies, like Shazam! or Birds of Prey to match these impressive numbers, the fact that nobody expected Aquaman to do this well in the first place also means that any other DC movie could turn out to be equally surprising.

Shazam! will be the next DC movie to bow this spring and with it focusing much more on humor than any previous DC movie it's going to be hard to guess how the box office will respond. Perhaps it will end up giving Aquaman a run for its money.
