The Fantastic Beasts Stars Fill In The Story Gap Between The First And Second Movies

David Yates' Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald begins a full year after the events of the first movie, and it's clear that things have changed in important ways for the main characters. It was a period that saw blossoming celebrity, new and deepening relationships, and more, and it's material that the lead actors had to understand in pre-production. And while some of it is and isn't canon, I got to talk with the cast all about it and the sequel's recent press day:

The domestic press day for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald was held earlier this month in Los Angeles, and while sitting down with Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller, Claudia Kim, Callum Turner, Dan Fogler, and Alison Sudol in paired group interviews I asked them all the same basic question: what's been going on with these characters since the last frame of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them? Each of them gave me some great background, some of it involving material that nearly made its way into the theatrical cut.

Eddie Redmayne's Newt Scamander, for example, has seen his life change significantly. Not only has he written and published the book he was discussing in the first movie, but it has becoming a hit in the wizarding community and earned him some extreme popularity. And while things have been a bit quiet in the romance department, he does have a new relationship with his assistant, Bunty (Victoria Yeates) to whom we are introduced in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald.

Of course, if you remember the end of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them you probably already guessed that none of this makes Katherine Waterston's Tina Goldstein very happy. Newt promised that he would return once he wrote his book, but it was a promise that was broken. Things are only made worse when a newspaper erroneously reports that Newt is engaged to his old flame, Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz), which eventually leads her to start dating again (though from Waterston's description of a deleted scene, it doesn't sound like her new relationship was going to be established as being in the greatest place).

For Ezra Miller and Claudia Kim, who play Credence Barebone and Nagini, a lot of their pre-production work involved getting close to one another and creating their own shared backstory -- which helped given that Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald doesn't tell us how the characters originally met. They had conversations with J.K. Rowling about the relationship (apparently Claudia Kim's first chat happened in the bathroom), but also made up their own ideas that they used for themselves.

When it came to Jacob and Queenie, played by Dan Fogler and Alison Sudol, the narrative was essentially the material of a romantic comedy. The two characters became all-but star-crossed lovers in the first movie, given the illegality of wizard/witch-muggle/no-maj relationships, and it seemed for a minute their story was over when Jacob's memory was erased. However, the final frame of the original Fantastic Beasts suggested a reignited spark in the man's mind, and Fogler and Sudol took it from there. Together they imagined a whirlwind romance, involving passion, high risk, and magical trips to Europe.

Compared to the rest of the actors I interviewed, Calum Turner had a bit of a different job playing Theseus Scamander, who is Newt's brother and makes his debut in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald. Rather than just filling in the events of a year, he had to establish the entire backstory of his character and the key relationships in his life. Fortunately there was plenty of material available for him to do research with, and the opportunities to talk about who Theseus is with David Yates and J.K. Rowling.

These are all puzzle pieces being put together within the Wizarding World, and audiences will be able to experience the latest chapter this weekend. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, which also stars Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Carmen Ejogo and William Nadylam, arrives in theaters Friday, November 16th -- and be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend for a whole lot more of our coverage in the coming days and weeks.

For the first decade of its existence, the Marvel Cinematic Universe made itself king both at the box office and in the hearts of the moviegoing public, but it went home empty handed every time on Oscar night. Then, a year ago, Ryan Coogler's Black Panther hit theaters, and Marvel knew it had something special on its hands - something that could win it an honor box office success can't buy. That instinct proved true because Marvel is having a great night at the Oscars.

At the 91st Academy Awards, Black Panther picked up its first Oscar. Then it went ahead and picked up its second and third. Black Panther won its, and Marvel's, first Oscar for Best Costume Design, for Ruth E. Carter's work bringing Wakanda to life through the clothes of its people. Then the film followed that up with another Oscar, this one for Best Production Design for Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart, followed by one for Ludwig Gransson for Best Original Score.

So after a decade without the highest recognition in the industry, Marvel now has three Oscars under its belt.

Marvel was ready for this night and so were the recipients of the Oscars. Ruth E. Carter, who had previously been nominated for her costume design on Malcolm X and Amistad proved that the third time was the charm and she delivered with a great speech that thanked everyone, was entertaining and well-prepared and even incorporated a fun reference to the film itself talking about how expensive it is to add vibranium to costumes.

While Ruth E. Carters speech was fun, Hannah Bleacher, who did the production design for the film alongside set decorator Jay Hart, delivered a heartfelt and incredibly emotional and inspiring speech about being stronger. She gave a ton of credit to Ryan Coogler, who though he was not nominated for Best Director, his presence has been felt throughout Black Panthers wins. Ludwig Gransson kept his speech short and sweet for his first Oscar win, helping with this brisk, frill-less ceremony.

The wins really highlight the achievement of Marvels film in creating a country and a culture. The Costume and Production Design awards honor how well the team of Black Panther brought the wonderful world of Wakanda to life to feel like a tangible place with its own history and culture. They created a technological utopia that is both futuristic and deeply African. And the score gave that world an audible texture and beauty.

For those of you keeping score at home, Marvel has now matched and surpassed the Oscar precedent set by rival DCEUs Suicide Squad. This is a huge milestone for Marvel and although it may be overdue, is still just as sweet. It was also very cool hearing Kevin Feige get thanked on the stage at the Dolby Theatre. He is the architect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, perhaps the grandest and most successful experiment in cinematic history.

Marvel knew it had something on its hands with Black Panther and it put together an Oscar campaign to champion the film and that has proven a worthwhile endeavor. It wasn't a clean sweep for Black Panther though as it lost out on Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing to Bohemian Rhapsody and Best Original Song to A Star is Born's "Shallow." It also couldn't do the impossible and win Best Picture, with that award going to Green Book.

Black Panther wasnt the only Marvel movie with a nomination tonight. Avengers: Infinity War was nominated for Best Visual Effects but, in what is sure to be lamented by Thanos fans out there, it lost out to First Man. So its been a good night for Marvel at the Oscars but for unknown reasons the special effects-driven MCU still remains statueless on the VFX front.

Despite that snub, Marvel should feel nothing but proud for how this Oscar night turned out. Marvel won three out of eight awards its films were nominated for, with Black Panther snagging three statues for Marvel. It was about a decade ago, when the MCU was in its infancy, that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight was famously snubbed a Best Picture nomination. Now this year we had a superhero film nominated for Best Picture and multiple other awards, going home with three of them. That's progress.

New Men In Black International Trailer Reveals Tessa Thompson's Origin Story

The Men in Black franchise is coming back, but with a very different look. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are taking over the leads as the organization tasked with managing aliens on earth, and the new trailer for the film finally gives us a bit more backstory on Tessa Thompson's rookie Agent M. Check out the new trailer below.

We've seen in previous trailers that Tessa Thompson's character gets her job with the Men in Black after successfully tracking them down herself, but it turns out the reason she knows about them at all is because she had a minor run in with them years before. It seems her parents had their memories wiped by the MiB, but they didn't know the young girl was watching. She's now spent her life trying to find the group, and finally has.

Apparently the Men in Black agree that discovering them is an acceptable method of job application and she gets the job. As we've seen, she gets paired with Chris Hemsworth's Agent H, a guy who is about from Tommy Lee Jones' mentor character from the original set of films as it is possible to get.

We also get new plot details in the form of the film's villain, called The Hive, which appears to be a group of aliens that are capable of making themselves look like anything. At one point we see our heroes going up against what looks like a bunch of fellow MiB agents, but are apparently aliens.

Of course, what's most memorable about the Men in Black films is really the creative alien designs, and also the gadgets and guns, and the new trailer for Men in Black International has plenty of all of that. We see lots of interesting looking aliens, even if we only see them briefly, wandering around the Men in Black home base. Several more humorous creatures are wandering around the world outside.

The most interesting alien, who appears to be a significant character in the film, is a little green man voiced by Kumail Nanjiani. He pledges his eternal devotion to Agent M, which apparently means he doesn't leave her side, as we see him standing on her shoulder later in the trailer.

Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are a glorious pair and they proved that they have great chemistry in Thor: Ragnarok. What's unclear from these trailers is if Men in Black International is going to have anything other than the chemistry of its two leads going on. There's just not a lot else to judge here. There's some funny bits. I particularly like the part where Tessa Thompson wants to drive the car but gets in on the wrong side.

However, a few good jokes won't be enough to save the movie if that's literally all there is. We'll get to see for ourselves when Men in Black International arrives in theaters June 14.
