Is Aquaman 2 Avoiding Competition With The Avatar Sequels?

Warner Bros. and the DC live-action universe are currently surfing on the massive success of James Wan's Aquaman. The underwater blockbuster made a ton of money at the box office, and delivered DC's first critical darling since Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman. All eyes are on what's next for Jason Momoa's hulking Arthur Curry, with the studio recently revealing plans for the film's sequel, hitting theaters in December of 2022. The fandom will have to wait a few years before diving back in, but is the 2022 release date actually an attempt to avoid competition with the Avatar franchise?

James Cameron is set to finally come through with the Avatar sequels, more than a decade after the first film arrived in theaters to break records. Avatar 2 will hit theaters in December 2020, in the spot left by Star Wars' absence following Episode IX. The threequel will then arrive December 17, 2021, so the writing is on the wall for the next few holiday seasons. Still, fans may be wondering why Aquaman 2 is holding off until 2022.

One struggle that comes with hide theatrical releases is timing. Having less competition at the box office can lead to major numbers, which is ultimately what studios like Warner Bros. are hoping for. And considering just how well the first Avatar movie performed, going up against the highly anticipated sequels would certainly be a bold move for Aquaman's sequel. He may be the King of the Sea, but Arthur Curry does have his limitations.

The timing of Aquaman's release no doubt helped the film become such a hit with audiences. December of 2018 was the first time Lucasfilm didn't release a new Star Wars movie in three holiday seasons. There was a noticeable gap in programming, and James Wan's underwater adventure scratched the itch felt by fans of action movies and nerd culture. As a result, Aquaman made a ton of money both domestically and internationally.

There has been no word yet as to whether or not James Wan will step behind the camera for Aquaman 2. But given the director's sterling reputation and his ability to seemingly do the impossible with Aquaman's underwater sequences, it seems likely that Warner Bros. would want him to return for the sequel. And considering how far away the Aquaman 2's release actually is, Wan should be able to schedule himself properly and balance the myriad other projects he's working on. Fingers crossed.

Aquaman's sequel is currently set to arrive in theaters on December 16, 2022. In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Why The X-Men Cast Loves Returning To Their Roles Every Few Years

One benefit of joining a superhero franchise is that, so long as you are doing a good job of adapting your comic-book source material, you get to return every few years and continue to develop the character. This can mean exploring new sides of a complicate hero (or villain). And sometimes, as was the case with Sir Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman, you can leap years into the future and play veteran shades of a character you helped create on screen. (And if you havent seen them in Logan yet, what the hell are you waiting for?)

We realized this when sitting down with the Dark Phoenix cast in London recently. Some members of the ensemble have been with this franchise since 2011s X-Men: First Class, which introduced younger versions of Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). Evan Peters joined the fray in X-Men: Days of Futures Past, while Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan and Alexandra Shipp signed on with X-Men: Apocalypse.

Seeing as how they were getting a chance to evolve their takes on the characters in Dark Phoenix, under the guidance of new director Simon Kinberg, I asked them what they really enjoyed about getting to come back and revisit their roles every couple of years. Michael Fassbender made the connection to the roles his colleagues are getting in top-notch television shows these days, telling CinemaBlend:

I suppose when you watch a lot of the great television thats out there at the moment, and it all for me started with The Sopranos, when you really get to dive in and really get to know these characters and follow them through different stages in their lives and different points in their life, where theyre at, its more of an in-depth study. Thats what this has allowed us to do, over four films, as opposed to just coming in [and] doing a standalone piece.

His co-star, James McAvoy, elaborated on that, noting:

Sometimes, you make a film and its just a standalone film. You put so much of yourself into it, and then its done. You walk away. And theres a virtue in that. Thats great, because you get to just move on with your life and do something different. Sometimes you think back and go, That was like, that was part of me that went into that. So, with Charles you put a lot of yourself into it, but we get to come back a little and we get to reconnect and make something that lasts a little longer than just that three months or the two months where you are making a movie.

The X-Men cast seems to have developed into a professional family over the years and how could they not? They have been collaborating with each other on the same saga for the better part of a decade, contributing to the storylines for Days of Futures Past, First Class, and Apocalypse before reuniting now for Dark Phoenix.

James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender noted that they have seen their own roles in the industry evolve over the same time frame, and it has been exciting seeing how the industry views the X-Men family and the work that they do:

Fassbender: Its also nice to come back and work with the group that we have. Its a fantastic bunch pf people. Really talented, but also generous of spirit. And so yes, its nice to come back. Theres the familiarity there, but theres also something new.McAvoy: Even that, within the family of the filmmakers, as well, watching different evolutions happen there. Watching Simon [Kinberg] step into the directors chair. And watching Sophie [Turner] step up and lead the movie.Fassbender: And watching JenniferMcAvoy: Oh my God, become the biggest movie star in the world! From an 18-year-old she was, like, in a film that had done alright to, like, the biggest movie star, ever. [Laughs]

Sophie Turner is a pretty massive star in her own right, thanks to the part of Sansa Stark on the wildly successful HBO drama Game of Thrones. In that situation, similar to the X-Men, she was able to return to the project every few years and keep evolving the way that the character was portrayed.

But when we spoke to Turner about Jean Grey and the X-Men, she singled out a specific device in this series that helps keep the characters fresh and new, explaining:

Thats the thing that I love so much about these movies is being able to develop a character over years. And the great thing is, as well, between each of these movies [theres] 10 years time. They jump for 10 years. So every time, you have to go back and go, Hmmmm, what have they been up to? What developments have been made in their lives? Thats something that I love, just fleshing out a storyline.

And sometimes, the ability to come back and live inside of a franchise just allows the cast to better understand the larger picture about how these movies are made. Just because you have made one doesnt mean that you are automatically an expert on massive tentpoles. Even Evan Peters, who has put his Quicksilver into several memorable X-Men moments, admitted to CinemaBlend:

I think, also, in terms of, just shooting these films is a whole technical masterpiece that I dont even Im not even smart enough to understand even a little bit of it. So its just kind of amazing to watch them do that and be a part of that so coming back, you sort of have a little bit of a better idea of what youre in for, which allows a little more freedom to be creative and explore different sides of the character.

Thats refreshingly cool to hear that the actors in these massive blockbusters are still learning and growing with each new chapter, developing their roles and refining their approaches to how their comic characters are portrayed on screen.

Should Mark Hamill write the next Star Wars trilogy? He's excited for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and all the speculation it has already spawned, but he has been open with his frustrations with the sequel trilogy -- including that we never got a real Luke/Leia/Han reunion. Turns out, he had an idea that could've at least partially given fans (and himself) that gift before the end of the Skywalker Saga.

Mark Hamill said he pitched his idea to J.J. Abrams when they were making Episode VII, The Force Awakens, as an alternate way for Luke to make a surprise late-in-the-film appearance while still managing to get the OG gang together again.

Everyone talks about the shock of realizing that, on Force Awakens, I don't come in until the last page. A bigger shock to me was them killing Han Solo before Luke could ever see his best friend again. I mean, it might be selfishly motivated, but I said, 'Holy cow, that's a real missed opportunity!' Even having the three of us together, even briefly.

So Mark Hamill told THR what he had previously pitched to The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams:

I pitched [J.J.] Abrams on the idea of, 'You can still have me come in at the very end, but how about this? How about Leia's trying to contact me telepathically, she gets frustrated because there's no answers, so she rushes to the new Death Star. And she almost gets there but she gets stopped by two Stormtroopers and, just before she's abducted, one Stormtrooper turns to the other one, blows him away, pulls off his helmet and says "Hi, sis, I'm here to rescue you."' I said, 'It'll blow the roof off the joint!' I'm still in it at the very end. And I think it's more effective to have people who have more of a history with Han Solo witness his dead, and be unable to stop it -- his wife, the mother of his child, his best friend -- instead of two characters who have known him what, 20 minutes?

Well, you'll get no argument from me. J.J. Abrams has already taken heat for The Force Awakens showing Leia hug Rey after Han's death instead of Han's other BFF Chewbacca. 'Cause it's true, Rey barely knew Han Solo. It would've had more impact to see Luke, Leia, and Chewie's emotional reactions. Abrams has shared regrets about the blocking of that particular scene, since it did come across as "a slight" to Chewie, which was not intended.

So it sounds like Mark Hamill had issues with both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, since he has also been candid with his frustration on the direction of Luke's storyline in Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Even if Episode IX somehow cobbles a Skywalker reunion together, it's too late for it to have the same kind of impact it could've had in The Force Awakens. Han Solo was killed by his son Ben/Kylo in The Force Awakens, Luke died in The Last Jedi, and Leia actress Carrie Fisher died in real life. Luke is still returning somehow in The Rise of Skywalker -- perhaps the title is a hint there -- and Leia will be shown in previously unused footage. But Star Wars lost its chance to get the original trio back.

Mark Hamill recently posted a photo hugging Harrison Ford, showing his own version of a Luke/Han reunion. He's really laying it on thick, but the frustration is shared by fans. That said, unlike Hamill, we as fans don't know what The Rise of Skywalker has in store in terms of Skywalker family reunions. The teaser trailer already showed Carrie Fisher's Leia in another mid-hug moment, but maybe we can hope for even more from J.J. Abrams, who has learned from his experience on The Force Awakens.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters December 20, as one of the many films to look forward to watching on the big screen in 2019.




Some fans were disappointed that this trio never appeared together on screen, with Luke only appearing in the film's final shot. Hamill himself was disappointed by this reveal, though he had his own ideas for Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams on how Luke could have returned to the saga.

Black Panther introduced several great new characters to us for the MCU, but then it took some of them away. Could we possibly see Forest Whitaker again in the inevitable Black Panther 2? It seems like such a thing isn't entirely outside the realm of possibility, While his character of Zuri was killed by Killmonger, the actor points out that the movie does set up a way for the dead to communicate with the living, so perhaps we could see Zuri again on the ancestral plane. I guess I would be like an Obi-Wan Kenobi, you know, who comes back, he talks from the ancestral plane to give advice to T'Challa. Chadwick's amazing in the film. Ryan Coogler's done such an amazing job, so proud to be in it.

The fact that there will be a Black Panther 2 is a foregone conclusion. The first movie has made a billion dollars around the world and you don't let franchises like that simply sit around. Although, one wonders if the first movie would have said goodbye to the characters that it did if it had been thinking about the future. Zuri, was a sort of surrogate father figure to T'Challa in Black Panther, with the hero having lost his own father during Captain America: Civil War. Unfortunately, T'Challa lost his second father in Black Panther when Zuri tried to get involved in the ritual combat, and was killed by Killmonger.

Exactly what the rules are of the ancestral plane are never clearly defined, but that would give Black Panther 2 some freedom to use it to bring back other deceased characters if it wanted to, as Forest Whitaker implies to ET. The name "ancestral plane" would seem to indicate that you can only speak with your ancestors here, and T'Challa and Zuri were not actually related as far as we know, but if we broaden the concept of an ancestor, then perhaps anybody who had a significant impact on somebody's life can be visited there.

Of course, the other issue with this idea is that we only ever see people visiting the ancestral plane after ingesting the nectar of the flower that gives the strength of the Black Panther, and we saw all of them get burned in the first movie. T'Challa would have to lose, and then regain his powers to find himself on the ancestral plane and not only does that seem unlikely, but we've already seen that play out once. Seeing it in the sequel would probably feel less than creative.

Still, if there's another way for Zuri to show in a Black Panther sequel, I'm all for it. Forest Whitaker is a great actor and any excuse necessary to get him back on the screen is acceptable.
