Disney Exec Thinks Solo: A Star Wars Story Reception Was Worse Than It Deserved

The last few years have been a great time for Star Wars fans, as new and exciting content hit theaters to expand the galaxy far, far away. One of the ways Disney expanded Lucasfilm's scope was through standalone films like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Ron Howard stepped in to complete Solo after the original directors' departure, but the blockbuster ended up being the franchise's first box office disappointment. But one top Disney exec thinks the project gets a bad wrap.

Alan Horn is Disney's Film Chief, and works on bringing the massive Star Wars franchise to theaters for the generations of fans. And while Solo: A Star Wars Story failed to be a critical or box office breakaway hit, he doesn't think it deserves all of the bad press it's gotten since arriving in theaters in May of 2018. He recently spoke to that, saying:

Its always a challenge because and I say this with love and respect for media the thing about these big movies is they get a lot of attention, whether positive or negative. So when they dont work, like Solo, the media says its a failure. I think it was a pretty good movie. It didnt resonate as much as wed hoped it would, but the press writes it up in a more negative way than I would. These are very high-profile movies. If Aladdin, which I happen to think is a terrific film, doesnt work somehow, thats big news and much bigger news than if a movie somewhere else, like The Kid Who Would Be King [at Fox,] doesnt work.

That's certainly one way of thinking. Because Solo was apart of the behemoth Star Wars franchise, the expectations for the standalone movie were sky high. Additionally, Solo had the added pressure of expanding a fan favorite's backstory, while passing the baton to Alden Ehrenreich from OG hero Harrison Ford. Audiences didn't ultimately respond to those efforts, and it's unclear if a sequel will come to fruition.

Alan Horn's comments to THR reflect the complicated world of filmmaking, especially when it comes to beloved franchises like Star Wars. Disney has the process largely down to a science, juggling both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and George Lucas' beloved space opera. Lucasfilm has also been shown to take risks with Star Wars, as Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi purposefully subverted fan expectations. J.J. Abrams is next back behind the director's chair for The Last Jedi, completing both the current trilogy and overall Skywalker Saga in one foul swoop.

It's currently unclear if standalone films are still in the cards for the Star Wars franchise, although Rian Johnson is working on his own trilogy of movies, while Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff have their own deal with Lucasfilm.

How Annabelle 3 Feels Like A New Conjuring Film

What started with The Conjuring in 2013 has grown organically into a connected universe with spinoffs of the mainline films that are now spawning sequels of their own. While we'll probably have to wait until 2020 for The Conjuring 3, the next sequel in The Conjuring universe arrives this year in the form of Annabelle 3. Unlike the other spinoffs to date in this universe, Annabelle 3 will actually feel like a new Conjuring film according to producer James Wan, who said:

I think by the very nature of Patrick and Vera being in it, I would say somewhat, yes, because in Annabelle 3 the doll comes back to the Warren's home. It finally comes to the Warren's home so by the very nature of it actually being in the home and the story takes place in the Warren's home, it feels more like a Conjuring film in that respect.

It sounds like the very nature of the story in Annabelle 3 will make it feel like a new Conjuring film. Prior to Annabelle 3, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga's Ed and Lorraine Warren didn't factor in to the Conjuring spinoff films. But as James Wan told Bloody Disgusting, Annabelle 3 will not only feature the two actors at the heart of this franchise, it will be set in the home of the Warrens.

The setting of the Warren home and the presence of Ed and Lorraine should make Annabelle 3 feel more like a new Conjuring film than any of the previous spinoffs. It also sounds like it will be a neat hybrid of a Conjuring film while also working as a spinoff in the franchise that continues the story of Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation.

Annabelle 3 is set before The Conjuring 2 and after the beginning of The Conjuring, once Ed and Lorraine have brought the Annabelle doll back to their home and put it in the Artifacts Room. Unfortunately for them, it turns out that putting a bunch of evil objects all in one place is not the best idea.

Annabelle awakens the other cursed objects in the Artifact Room in a horrific Night at the Museum scenario, and they target the Warren's 10-year-old daughter Judy, played by McKenna Grace.

When the plot for Annabelle 3 was first announced, it seemed obvious that Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga's characters would have to be in it, but now that we know they will appear, and with James Wan's statements here, it makes this spinoff the most exciting one yet. Seeing the Warren's once again dealing with the paranormal should definitely make this feel, at least to a degree like a Conjuring film; The Conjuring 2.5 perhaps, or 1.5 given its place in the timeline.

As for the next proper Conjuring film, The Conjuring 3 is scheduled to shoot this year under the direction of Michael Chaves, director of the upcoming The Curse of La Llorona, who will take over for James Wan. Aquaman and The Conjuring 2 screenwriter David Leslie Johnson is returning to work on the script.

This week marks the release of Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One, a film that sees the director returning to the kind of adventure filmmaking that immortalized his career and established modern blockbuster filmmaking. This event has everyone looking back on the career of the legendary director, and Spielberg's name is everywhere at the moment. One company is trying to capitalize on all the Spielberg love in order to sell... hamburgers. Yes, fast food chain Carl's Jr. is paying tribute to the man himself by introducing SpielBurgers, though not if Warner Bros has anything to say about it. Take a look at Carl's Jr.'s initial pitch:

That's not bad. It teases something special and magical, complete with John Williams-esque music, before showing you a hamburger wearing VR goggles. How has no other company noticed this opening before? We should have been eating SpielBurgers for ages; a limited time culinary event, like the McRib or the Mulan Szechuan Sauce, coinciding with the release of each new Spielberg film. Perhaps Steven Spielberg is just particular about what amalgamation of salt and grease he slaps his name onto, although looking at some of the movies he's produced... Anyway, Warner Bros. was quick to put the kibosh on this burger campaign in a very 'matter of fact' fashion.

Aww, come on, Warner Bros., don't be such sticks in the mud. Nothing screams revolutionary technology and grand adventure quite like a tiny hamburger manufactured on a grand scale and sold to a demanding public. If anything, thanks to McDonald's Happy Meals, our pop culture has a longstanding history of intertwining with the fast food industry. Twitter is not a venue for de-escalation though, so this ratcheted up as the Carl's Jr. account asked for Steven Spielberg's contact info. Warner Bros. denied the request. At that point, Carl's Jr. responded in a way that tee'd up Warner Bros. perfectly to question the class of the fast food restaurant. Check it out:

Damn, burned almost as bad as those burgers! Questioning whether or not a company, whose commercials have featured half-naked women eating burgers, owns formal wear is brilliant. Still though, I think WB was going easy on Carl's Jr. Either that or it missed the opening. Personally, I would have gone for the jugular and remarked how, just like Ready Player One's OASIS, Carl's Jr.'s burgers almost look like the real thing. That's low-hanging fruit perhaps, but Carl's Jr. has a history of absurd and ridiculous marketing, so it should be able to laugh at itself. And it appears that Carl's Jr. may have had the last laugh anyways, as unlike most social media disputes, the fast food joint was ready to take it to the streets and put its burgers where its mouth is. Observe:

Staged? Almost certainly. But still, this is a fun little stunt. Personalizing each SpielBurger to represent one of the director's classic films, as well as Ready Player One, was a nice touch as well. A company's social media game has to be on point in today's market. Up until this point Wendy's has been the undisputed social media champ among fast food companies, but Carl's Jr. is clearly making a play for the crown. Ready Player One hits theaters on March 29.
