Solo's Millennium Falcon Twist Connects To The Original Star Wars Trilogy

The following contains a spoiler for Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Solo: A Star Wars Story gave us a lot of brand new information about some our favorite characters in the franchise, but one of the most intriguing new details was about our favorite spacecraft. The new movie reveals that Lando's co-pilot, L3-37, actually has her databanks dumped into the Millennium Falcon, making her part of the ship forever. It may seem like an odd way to go, considering this is never referenced anywhere else in the Star Wars franchise, except, it turns out maybe it is, as a line from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back now has a very different meaning based on this knowledge.

The Millennium Falcon is suffering from all sorts of technical problems all throughout The Empire Strikes Back. Han Solo has C-3PO interface with the ship in an attempt to discover what is wrong with the hyperdrive so that they can use it to escape their Imperial pursuers. This interfacing leads to the line above, as the droid tells Han that the Falcon's dialect is a little strange. As the Star Wars Twitter account points out, that peculiar dialect is apparently due to the remnants of L3-37 inside the ship.

Certainly, no other droid that we have met in a Star Wars movies is quite like L3-37. She's more self-aware than any other droid we know and is vocal about the rights of all droids. While C-3PO is a protocol droid and therefore is fairly proper, L3-37 doesn't mind getting a little rowdy or dirty. It's not shocking that 3PO would find her "peculiar." If only we could actually hear what she said.

The issue with making prequels that were not part of a larger plan at the beginning is that it becomes difficult to create anything new that feels important because it never gets referenced later in the chronology of the story. Here, it appears that writers Lawrence and Jonathan Kasdan found a way to work backwards, by taking a line from the original trilogy, one that didn't really require an explanation, and using it to connect to the story they were creating. It works well as far as it goes. The moment in Empire now becomes an easter egg of sorts, the kind that will be completely overlooked by any that aren't aware of the connection, but that can be fun for the fans that know what it means.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is guilty of giving us a lot of answers to questions that most people never asked, but with the possible exception of feeling a need to explain the title character's name, most of the answers were handled well enough. Fans of L3-37 will now think of her whenever they watch the original trilogy, as they wonder just what she's telling C-3PO, probably that he doesn't need to serve these people.

What Frank Oz Thinks Of Star Wars: The Last Jedi Backlash

It's been months since its release, but cinephiles and Star Wars fans alike haven't stopped dissecting every frame of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Rian Johnson's explosive sequel purposefully subverted fan expectations, and delivered a ton of plot twists that just about nobody was expecting. Its because of these twists that some hardcore fans have taken umbrage with The Last Jedi, with purists claiming its shouldn't even be included in the beloved catalogue. This hasn't seem to have affected the cast or crew, including the legendary Frank Oz. Oz voiced and operated Yoda in the latest sequel, and recently addressed all the backlash still surrounding The Last Jedi.

Yeah, there's a whole backlash. I couldn't understand that whole backlash. I didn't get it. I thought it was a great piece of work. I never understood that backlash. I'm somebody that works with the script, and if the script is there and I believe the script is organic and right for the moment and the character, then that's kind of all I think about. I don't think about extra powers or anything, I just go with it. I just don't consider that really.

It looks like Frank Oz believes moviegoers should simply suspend their disbelief and enjoy the latest installment in the galaxy far, far away. After all, there's already light up swords, space battles, and robotic both and alien sidekicks. Just go with it.

Much of the fan complaints around Star Wars: The Last Jedi has to do with Rian Johnson's liberal use of Force abilities. The rules of The Force have never really been established, as it has ranged from a mythical lifeforce to microscopic lifeforms known as midi-chrlorians. As such fans have never truly understood all The Force was capable of in the film canon.

That being said, some of the new abilities worked better than others. While fans were bummed to see Luke pass away at the end of the film, his Force Projection to Crait was a fantastic twist that allowed fans to finally see him back in his former glory. Leia's abilities are where things get a bit murkier, as most people do not seem fond of her survival in space in the film's first act. Part of this may have been related to Fisher's untimely death, but Leia had also never shown any real connection to The Force throughout the franchise, aside from being able to sense her loved ones.

Ultimately Star Wars films are meant to be enjoyed without too much though, although the hype for each new installment can set expectations that are impossible to be met. Fans complained that The Force Awakens was too formulaic, and that The Last Jedi took too many risks. Frank Oz's comments to Collider seem to implore the community to go for the ride, but that's up to each individual moviegoer.

The New Deadpool 2 Poster Goes All-In On Flashdance

The right marketing and advertising plan has the potential to make or break a movie. We've seen how successful advertising benefit movies like Cloverfield and its sequels, drumming up excitement in a major way. No blockbuster in recent memory has had commercials/ posters quite as delightful as Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool. Ahead of the release of the first film, there was a mass of hilarious videos and images of the merc with the mouth. This helped the quirky and fairly new character grab cinephiles' attention, and reach its massive $783.1 million global earnings. Deadpool 2 is doing just the same, and the sequel's latest poster is a hilarious spoof of the 80s classic Flashdance. Check it out.

How hilariously bonkers is that? Let's unpack this fantastic spoof, which will probably not be the last one leading up the highly anticipated release of Deadpool 2.

From first glance, most audience can see that Deadpool is doing his own version of the iconic chair dance from 1983's Flashdance. The movie focuses on aspiring dancer Alex, and one particularly sexy number ends with the protagonist dumping a bucket of water on herself from above. It's a shot that has remained in the pop culture lexicon for the decades since Flashdance arrived in theaters, having been spoofed in a variety of media. Wade Wilson isn't one to be left out, and his version of the chair dance definitely delivers.

Because instead of water falling down upon the psychotic anti-hero, Deadpool makes it rain with bullets. The character is known for his penchant for gunfights, hiding pieces all around his apartment with Blind Al. The caption underneath the hilarious image reads "Take your passion. And make it happen". This is a reference to Flashdance's other big scene, the ending dance which features the Irene Cara song "What A Feeling". Deadpool is a franchise that loves its pop culture references, so it should be no surprise that the latest Deadpool 2 poster is a one two punch of Flashdance jabs.

Admit it: you're picturing Deadpool engaging in the same choreography. Except his ending would probably result in far more dirty jokes and a helping of murder.

It should be interesting to see how Deapdool 2's posters and trailers continue to surprise us in the coming months. With the sequel arriving in just a few months, we're gearing up for an exciting time for the franchise.
