Marvel Exec Slams Rumor Disney Might Shut Down Marvel Comics

There's no question adaptations of Marvel Comics characters are the most massive blockbusters of today. Just look at the highest grossing movies of 2018 superheroes absolutely dominated, between the record-breaking successes of Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Venom. While the movies may be thriving, Disney has seen a drop in revenue for Marvel Comics.

So when a panel at South By Southwest (SXSW) called "Marvel: From Comics To Screens" -- hosted by Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and Chief Creative Officer Joe Queseda -- was recently announced, Bleeding Cool published a take that perhaps the Marvel executives were holding the panel to "make the case" to Disney of the importance of Marvel Comics at a time when "they add little value to the budget on their own."

The article led to sites and social media fanning the flames of the rumor, with headlines such as "Disney Shutting Down Marvel Comics?" and tweets explaining there is no MCU without the comics. Joe Queseda has now taken to his Twitter to comment on the rumor, with these words:

Must be a slow news day. Ladies and gents I give you the dumbest comics conspiracy of the week. Sometimes a panel is just a panel.

There you have it, from the Marvels chief creative officer no, Disney is not pulling the plug on Marvel Comics. You can imagine the backlash the company would receive if it suddenly shut down the publisher that influenced the upcoming Captain Marvel movie, along with the many other films, television shows and video games influenced by Marvel Comics.

Disney closing the comic publisher would also be a huge slap in the face to the late Stan Lees legacy. Lee recently passed in November after dedicating much of his life to building the publishing company up into the massive brand it is today.

While it is true that comic book revenue is down lately in comparison to other media properties dedicated to telling stories, many would say without the continuation of Marvel Comics, it would stunt the growth of the other mediums based on it. So Joe Quesedas comments about it being dumb are certainly in line.

During the upcoming Marvel Comics panel at SWSW in Austin, Texas, the two executives will be leading an hour-long "interactive discussion about the history and landscape of Marvel Comics," and talking about how their storylines have contributed to popular culture through games, movie and television.

The annual festival will also see the world premiere of Jordan Peeles second horror film Us, starring Lupita Nyongo, Winston Duke, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Elisabeth Moss on March 8, before its theatrical release on March 22. The approach to telling the life story of a celebrity like Elton John is always a point of interest when discussing a film like Rocketman. Blame it on that ever blurry line between making a serious portrait of a persons life, while also keeping things exciting. But if actor Taron Egerton is to be believed, this line wont be that much of a problem, as Rocketman plans to use something special to marry the two sides of the issue: magical thinking.

This isnt all that much of a surprise when you watch the trailers to director Dexter Fletchers biopic. Depicting moments like Elton Johns various performances at landmark venues like The Troubadour or Dodger Stadium with a sort of puckish edge to them, and with scenes that involve very musical staging and spectacle, Rocketman was always going to have somewhat of a magical quality to it.

But in a recent interview, Taron Egerton discussed more specific details on how the serious happenings in Johns very public past would mesh with these fantastical musical numbers. His remarks on this rather intereting blend were as follows:

Most of what is in the story really happened, but we've been able to embellish and make it all a bit magical. It's a story about someone going to rehab, and you can't really tell that story without visiting some of the darkness that leads someone to go there. Its essentially a story about someone incredibly special and gifted. There aren't many people who have touched the world in the same way, really.

Despite the involvement of a rather controversial figure, the musical biopic Beyond The Sea is a good example of the sort of approach that Rocketman is looking to achieve. Using the song catalogue of Bobby Darin, that film took his life and times and told them with full song and dance numbers integrated in a way that didnt step on his personal story.

One aspect that has some moviegoers worried about how Rocketman will take off with critics and audiences is another film that Dexter Fletcher had a hand in directing: the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. While Fletcher only directed the last third of the Academy Award winning film, the issue of how that particular picture treated the life of Freddie Mercury has film fans wondering if a similar coat of gloss will be layered onto Elton Johns own history.

With a life that included fights with cocaine addiction and bulimia, as well as personal pain involving the loss of friends like Mercury to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, you can see how Rocketman could have the potential to drop the ball. But considering the care thats been taken by the director (and Taron Egerton himself) regarding how Elton Johns personal struggles are presented in Rocketman, I have to wonder just how magical things will get. Even with rumors of how Johns love life would be toned down for a PG-13 rating turns out to be merely scuttlebutt, that doesn't say that all other issues on the table will be addressed equally.

Still, everything seems to be in order when compared to what Egerton told USA Today in their coverage on the films must-see status during this summers movie season. So we're still glad to hear that Rocketman is doing the best it can to avoid being a typical biopic.

Crawl Looks Like Jaws For Alligators And It's Awesome

You know what I love most about the trailer for Crawl? You KNOW that the creative team behind it basically watched The Meg and knew about Jaws and thought, What other water-based creature can we tap into to produce that same fun vibe? The answer appears to be Alligators, as this wild thriller appears to sell in the first giddy trailer for Crawl. Check it out:

Whats not to love about Crawl? It takes place during an unprecedented storm. It fully embraces its Florida setting, evacuating residents during a Category 5 hurricane. And it traps Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper in their slowly flooding home as a pack of wild alligators hunt them.

Perfect. Where do I buy a ticket?

You need more? The creative team behind Crawl is producer Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-Man) and director Alexandre Aja (Horns, Piranha 3D, The Hills Have Eyes). The know horror, and Aja has shown with his movies that he understands how to have fun in truly terrifying situations. Also, did you notice that theres a scene in the trailer where the crocodile bites down on Scodelarios hand while shes holding a gun, so she unloads a clip of bullets into the beasts belly?

To coincide with the launch of the Crawl trailer, Paramount actually dropped a funny viral meme that will remind people of the Orange Tile used to drum up anticipation for the Fyre Festival. If you were scanning Instagram this morning and saw this, you might have wondered what was going on:

Lets hope that Crawl turns out to be more successful than the Fyre Festival. Crawl will slither into theaters during the hectic summer blockbuster season, where it will go head to head against 21 Bridges and the action comedy Stuber. All three will want to hurry up and make their money, though, because The Lion King will be breathing down their collective necks the following weekend.

Alexandre Aja directs Crawl, the people vs alligator thriller, which stars Kaya Scodelario (Pirates of the Caribbean), Barry Pepper, Morfydd Clark and Ami Metcalf. Will they be more than simple alligator feed? Find out later this summer.
