More Layoffs Coming To Disney And Fox After Merger

As Disney continues to merge the 21st Century Fox organization into its existing structure, it's being reported that another round of significant layoffs are taking place. This time, layoffs are hitting both sides of the fence, with people within both the previous Fox company as well as Walt Disney Studios employees being cut. While no official statement has been made by Disney, the divisions that handle marketing, publicity, and domestic film distribution are expected to be the ones facing the biggest cuts.

It's too surprising to see cuts to these particular divisions happening now. It was just about 10 days ago that Walt Disney Studios released an updated release calendar, the first to include Fox projects. Making this decision was a major priority for the new company, and now that it was made, Disney knows exactly what its needs in the realm of distribution and marketing will be, and with that information, it knows how many employees will actually be needed. Clearly not as many as it has.

The Fox studio used to release a dozen or more movies in a year when it was a separate company, but is set to release only nine in 2020. Disney CEO Bob Iger says that he expects Fox will produce something life five to six films a year once things get settled. Clearly, with a reduction like that, there are going to be fewer employees needed to do the work of distribution and marketing those films.

We saw a first significant round of layoffs on March 21. The acquisition of Fox had been made official earlier that month. Those cuts reportedly were exclusive to the Fox side of the business, so this appears to be the first round of layoffs to have a significant impact on existing Disney cast members.

While the Disney/Fox merger may have some exciting possibilities when it comes to content, there are downsides from every other perspective. Having one fewer major studio will simply reduce the number of movies being made, which means fewer voices getting a chance to have their stories heard. It also means fewer people working in general, as these layoffs show.

The purchase of Fox in the first place was designed to make Disney more competitive in a modern media marketplace. Disney is launching the Disney+ streaming service in November and the Fox owned content like National Geographic adds to the depth of material the service will be able to provide.

At the same time, Disney has to keep its costs down as much as possible in order to remain as profitable as possible. Disney has already said that Disney+ will actually be a money loser in the short term of the next couple of years. Those loses will need to be offset by gains elsewhere, and that means keeping costs down at the movie studio.

Variety reports that the total number of layoffs could reach as many as 4,000 people before it's all over. We don't even know how many have been given the pink slip yet, so that means we also don't know how many more times this is going to happen.

New Dark Phoenix Clip Has The Mutants Debating What To Do With Jean

It's no secret that comic book movies are everywhere. The superhero genre has been dominating the filmmaking world for years, with a variety of studios working on their own cinematic universes. But the X-Men franchise was there before any of it, dating back to the original film's release in 2000. The long-running property looks like it's coming to an end with Simon Kinberg's Dark Phoenix, the whopping 12th film in the series.

Dark Phoenix is the X-Men franchise's second go at the titular comic book plot, putting Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner in the spotlight as Jean Grey. Jean's terrifying cosmic power will divide the mutants after they take over her body and mind, and a new clip teased that coming conflict. Check it out.

Does anyone else have chills? Despite the X-Men's long tenure in theaters, it looks like new ground is being broken with Dark Phoenix. And Jean Grey's struggle with the Phoenix Force will also cause new alliances to be formed

This new Dark Phoenix clip shows the mutants in Central Park. It looks like Jean has traveled to New York City during her conflict with the Phoenix Force, and both the X-Men and Brotherhood are attempting to find her. Professor X and Magneto share some choice words with each other, debating what Jean had done, and the implications that come with the two groups doing battle with each other.

Obviously what the character are referencing is Jean's (accidental?) murder of Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique. Mystique's death was spoiled during the full Dark Phoenix trailer, and looks like that action will have a grave affect on the rest of the characters, as well as the blockbuster as a whole. And from this new clip, it looks like X-Men have already begun defecting to Magneto's cause.

Most notably, it looks like Nicholas Hoult's Beast is going to be joining the villain side of the argument when Dark Phoenix arrives in theaters. This plot twist certainly tracks, as Beast and Mystique shared a romantic connection, most notably in First Class. It looks like her death will hit the big blue guy hard, and he's on a mission for justice regarding Sophie Turner's character.

Dark Phoenix was reportedly always planned to be the final installment in the long-running X-Men franchise, so it should be interesting to see what narrative choices Simon Kinberg and his team settle on. If its truly poised to be the grand finale, Kinberg should be able to kill off as many characters as he wants, with no real consequences. So perhaps Mystique isn't the only mutant to meet the wrath of Jean's new abilities.

The Awesome Advice Jennifer Lawrence Gave Brie Larson About Being An Oscar Winner

Brie Larson has acted in a wide variety of projects over her career, including the 2015 drama Room. Larson earned numerous accolades for her performance as Joy Newsom in that movie, which included taking home the Academy Award for Best Actress. Winning an Oscar is a tremendous accomplishment for any actor, but the award became more meaningful to Larson after she received some advice from fellow Hollywood star Jennifer Lawrence about framing the win in more practical terms. As Larson recalled:

I was like, I dont feel any different. I dont feel better about myself. I still dont feel like Im a good actress. She was like, Oh, yeah. Thats totally normal. Ive had the same thing. Dont think of it like that. Think of it as, like, you got your Ph.D. Youre certified; thats it.

After winning her Best Actress Oscar on February 28, 2016, Brie Larson called Jennifer Lawrence the morning after feeling bewildered about owning one of these golden trophies. Fortunately, as Larson stated during her interview with InStyle, Jennifer Lawrence, whos no stranger to winning acting awards, suggested she appreciate the Oscar simply as a certification. Larsons already proved her acting chops in various other movies and TV shows, and while she didnt feel differently about herself overall, her Room performance and the Oscar win that followed was firm proof that shes one of the best performers in the business.

Jennifer Lawrence was definitely a good person for Brie Larson to talk with after bringing home the Academy Award. Like Larson, Lawrence is a performer whos made a big splash in Hollywood at a young age. She won her Oscar for Best Actress for her performance as Tiffany Maxwell in 2012s Silver Linings Playbook, and shes been nominated three other times, most recently for playing Joy Mangano in 2015s Joy. Lawrence has a good handle on how to look at these accolades, so if she could aid Larson on that front, then good on her!

Given her increasing stardom, one would imagine its only a matter of time before Brie Larson is up for Academy Awards consideration again. In the meantime, she has plenty of projects to keep busy with in the near future. Next month Larsons jumping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the half-human, half-Kree superhero Captain Marvel and shell co-star alongside Michael B. Jordan in Just Mercy next year. It was also announced last week that Unicorn Store, which was her first time directing a feature, as she co-helmed it with Lynette Howell Taylor, will hit Netflix in April. The two women are teaming up again behind the camera for Lady Business, which will be released on the same streaming platform and Larson is also expected to star in.
